Steel drums are also known as Steel Pan or Pan and the band is often referred to as a steelband. NJ steel drums are made from 55-gallon drums that originally held oil or other fluids. The top of the drum is pounded into a bowl-like shape through a process known as “sinking”. The steel drum is then heated over a fire and, using various tools, is shaped and tuned to specific notes. The Pan family consists of drums of various sizes, to fully cover the range of musical notes. A Soprano Steel pan may be capable of producing 30 different notes while a large bass steel drum may only produce 3 unique pitches. Sometimes you will hear a steel drum band in New Jersey where each performer has many drums so that they can cover a greater musical range. The first reported performance of a steel drum band was at the Trinidad and Tobago Carnival in 1940. The steel drum is thus a contemporary musical instrument that has quickly gained respectability and been enjoyed by music lovers.
